What Is Causing My Dogs Anxiety

09/26/2019

Dogs can get anxiety just like humans can. yeah, I never thought it was a thing until my dog started suffering from it.

After learning how to cure dog anxiety, I figured I would share some reasons why dogs get it in the first place.

Signs of Dog Anxiety

Some signs are super noticeable like fidgeting, avoidance of eyes, hiding, shaking and tucked tails. Others aren't so obvious.

  • Excessive licking
  • Panting
  • Pacing
  • Avoiding
  • Dilated pupils
  • Yawning
  • Air sniffing
  • Shaking "like a wet dog."
  • Spontaneous bowel movements
  • Digging
  • Chewing
  • Escaping
  • Whining

If a dog starts to exhibit any of these behaviors in an odd manner, it could be signs of anxiety. Generally, they will be obsessive in nature so you should be able to pinpoint if it's stress-related.

What Causes Dog Anxiety

Dogs can and will become anxious for many reasons. Some are obvious, and some are not.

1. Rescue/shelter dogs

Dogs that are from a shelter often suffer from anxiety, sometimes its long term sometimes it's only until they start to feel comfortable around you and their new surroundings.

Most of the time people do not know a dog's past when they are adopted from a shelter, that specific dog could have been abused, or they could have been really loved in their past life and are mourning it.

2. Separation Anxiety

Dogs become attached to human interaction reasonably easily, and when that is ripped away from them; they can start to suffer from something called Dog Separation Anxiety.

Dogs that suffer from separation anxiety often develop destructive behaviors such as chewing, digging, barking, etc.

In severe cases, they will even drool or cause themselves harm.

3. Change

When a dog's life changes it can trigger anxiety.

Some changes that cause anxiety:

  • Moving to a new home
  • Bringing home a new baby or puppy
  • More people coming over to visit
  • New job with a new schedule
  • Going back to work after a long period off

4. Breed

Some dog breeds are more prone to anxiety than others because they get really attached to their owners.

Dog breeds that are prone to anxiety include."

  • Havanese
  • Bichon Frise
  • Border Collie
  • German & Australian Shepherd
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Vizsla
  • Cocker Spaniel
  • Greyhounds
  • Many toy breeds

Final Thoughts

Dog anxiety is real and can cause harm to your dog if left untreated. Anxiety is one of those things that cause pain and suffering to your dog.

The last thing as a dog owner you should ever want is to allow them to suffer in any way.

If your dog is suffering from anxiety learn how to cure dog anxiety ASAP.

The longer you wait, the harder it will be to cure. Some people never attempt to deal with their dogs' anxiety, and it gets so out of hand that they end up giving them to an animal shelter.

This is another reason why so many dogs in shelters have anxiety, is because their original owner didn't want to deal with the problem they were suffering from.
